EDINBURGH’S HISPANIC FESTIVAL IS BACK WITH A FLOURISH FOR 2008

Thursday 16th October

Event: Da Sang o da Barren Orange Tree - Fae Andalusia ta Shetland.

Lorca’s most beautiful poems translated and read by local poet Christie Williamson in Shetlandic Scots. Alongside their originals in Spanish, Williamson’s translations brilliantly capture the heartfelt rhythms of Andalucia and Southern Spain. He will be accompanied, live, by guitarist Galo Ceron.

Event: Flame and Fury - encuentros/encounter

"Refreshingly risk-taking and experimental encounter between Celtic music and flamenco dance" (The Scotsman ****). Developed in residence at Edinburgh’s Dancebase with members of Mouthmusic, Shooglenifty, Flamenco Puro and invited guests.

Friday 17th October

Event: Kalkutun* - A bewitching classical ensemble
Venue: Scottish Storytelling Centre,

Time: 7.30pm (1hour)
This piece has been specifically arranged and directed for an 11-piece virtuoso ensemble led by Chilean composer Galo Ceron. Kalcatun will enchant audiences with the beautiful melodies of popular Latin-American music. Ceron’s arrangements bring a contemporary edge to these seminal songs.

*Kalkutun means to bewitch in Mapuche (the ancient language of the indigenous inhabitants of Central and Southern Chile and Southern Argentina).

A Latin club night with the UK's most exciting and original Afro-Latin/Salsa-Soul band, Rumba Caliente, led by Salsa Celtica's Toby Shippey and featuring Lino Rocha on lead vocals. Special invited guests include funky/Latin DJ Simon Hodge and Salsa DJ James Combe. Not for the fainthearted!

Event: Cuban dance workshop - cha-cha-chá and salsa

Cuban cha-cha-chá and salsa dance workshop for all levels by the gifted Lily Zequera (Havana, Cuba).

Event: Fiesta por Bulerias dance workshop - flamenco style party
Venue: Dancebase
14-16 Grassmarket, Edinburgh, EH1 2JU
Time: 4.30pm (1 hour)
Dance workshop by the extraordinary Tote Conte (Seville, Spain). Flamenco style party, with live guitar, handclapping and singing. No experience necessary.

Event: Gracias a la Vida - Chilean tribute

An evening of song revealing the beauty of Chile in this tribute to Violeta Parra and Victor Jara (two of Latin America’s most significant singers of the second half of the 20th century). Guitarist Galo Ceron and singer Carlos Arredondo “a sort of unofficial Chilean cultural attaché to Scotland” (The Scotsman) bring to life the energy and hopes of Chile’s pioneering New Song Movement during the 1960s and 1970s.

Event: Cantando y Recitando

An inspirational journey of original songs and poems lead by Chilean poet and singer/songwriter - Carlos Arredondo - "possibly the most far-flung outrider of Latin America's nueva canción (new song) movement" (The Scotsman). Arredondo’s singing and songwriting is fuelled by passion and delivered with eloquence.
