Hispanic Arts Scotland

Hispanic Arts Festival with the sponsorship support of the Spanish General Consulate in Edinburgh, continue to celebrate the UNESCO nomination of Flamenco as Intangible Heritage by programming the authentic and original premiere of Oscar de Los Reyes and Company.

In the show "Sevilla al Aire", internationally acclaimed and powerful flamenco dancer Oscar de los Reyes, together with his talented company of Cristina Benitez, Jesús Corbacho, and Raul El Perla, will make you experience the diverse and vibrant history of their native Seville through the passionate language of flamenco dance, song and guitar.

The show's programme titles are fully evocative of the city's landmarks and the company will start with the sensual tangos "Giralda", the almohad minaret tower, over a 100 meters tall, that dominates and captivates the whole of the city of Seville.

They will continue with the Guajira "Muelle de la Sal" (The Salt Docks) to remind us of the times when Seville was an important port that from the 16th century onwards saw thousands of American ships sailing through the river Guadalquivir, full with cargos of salt, cocoa and sugar.

In "Fragua los Morenos" (The Brown's Forge), they will give us an insight into the gypsy cava of Triana, where the Brown gypsy clan had a forge for centuries and whose anvil and hammer have inspired this Seguiriya finished with Martinete.

"Pueblos" is a Soleá por Bulería where Oscar de los Reyes will interpret the crucial role played by villages and towns like Utrera and Lebrija, and their past and current influence in the development of flamenco.

"Sevillanía", the joyous spirit of Seville, a city full of squares and streets perfumed with organge blossom, with elegant architecture, with cultural routes of hedonism that explore the vast city centre and its gastronomic treasures in charming locations all the year round, Seville's April Feria and its lively colours... are all depicted through the style of Alegrías (joy). In this style Oscar de los Reyes has been awarded with the National Alegrias Price La Perla de Cadiz, 2008.

To complete the programme "De Sorpresa en Sorpresa" will be a "Fiesta por Bulerías", a thrilling and fast style full of improvised rythms and turns, where you expect artists to change roles to fully play their artistic freedom that prevails in flamenco and its culture.

"Oscar de los Reyes literally makes music with his feet, striking tattoos and prolonged, intense roll on the stage floor that a drummer would be hard pushed to replicate with sticks" Rob Adams ****... Unmissible!
